“Get ready, cause the Captn’ is about to make it happen”
I have not written a blog since March 2010. The main reason for this was lack of time, but one can not ignore the fact that sadly, neither WWE nor TNA managed to inspire me enough to put my heart and soul into it.
Dont get me wrong, there are good things on both shows…ok, maybe a few less on impact
but you’re catching my drift here.
Now, it is time to speak again. Unlike my silly and girly reviews, this will just be me stating my opinion about the things going on in WWE right now, or better, the things I think are not going on ha.
It’s a blog purely written out of need to vent and basically scream my opinion in everybody’s face. Will it do any good? Course not! Will I feel better after? Probably!
Do I want feedback? Yes please
Let’s cut right to the chase: Last Sunday, at Extreme Rules, we all got to witness something that we almost had given up on … Christian on top of the world!
I had hoped WWE would decide to finally let him have one of the major titles and finally, after years and years, they did. I was insanely happy…actually, that might still be an understatement.
Ever since his debut had I waited for this moment, as I am sure many “Peeps” have, not to forget Christian himself too. It was one of these rare moments, when even a long-time fan like me, grins like an idiot and possibly jumps up and down like an idiot.
Not that I would ever do such a thing
It is very hard for the WWE to impress us folks that have been around for years, for various reasons really. One major reason for this is that there’s no more long storylines anybody can invest any feeling in. We can thank the “Attitude Era” for making everything seem so “real”, stories hardly matter anymore.
Well, actually they do, but WWE seems to have forgotten.
In the fast-paced world of WWE, with 10-12 PPV’s a year, there’s no time for long drawn-out plans … unless they involve The Rock and John Cena. Actually, one could almost speculate that this match being announced one year prior is Vince’ way to shut all of us sharing that opinion up haha.
BUT (you know there’s always a but): Dont you guys remember how long HBK waited for his first WWE Championship? ANd how long it took him to face Bret Hart? The “Boyhood-dream” storyline went on for many month before Bret and Shawn ever had a match and for me, as a HBK-fan, the moment when he finally won that title, was so big, I actually had tears in my eyes (you can possibly blame some of that on the hormons of a teenager too haha).
I know the same about wrestling now then I knew back then: It is scripted, yes, I know, but if you build something up for so long and allow the fans, me, to invest emotions in it, the result is that we actually care. Even the “IWC”.
I digressed, as usual haha.
What I am trying to say is: I’ve waited so long for Christian to win that Title, I invested feelings and cared more than I cared about any title-reign in a long time. And I am sure most if not all “Peeps” would agree.
I was looking forward to watching SmackDown … and I mean REALLY looking forward. I knew Christian’s speech would be awesome and I wanted to celebrate with him.
I usually try to stay away from spoilers for the most part, but there’s certain things one can’t avoid … unless you dont follow any wrestling-fans on twitter or stay of the internet from Wednesday morning (I live in Germany, so SD-tapings for me end in the am) until Friday evening.
This week was one of those cases. The outrage was all over my timeline, coming from Jeff Katz, Dave Lagana and numerous “Peeps”.
The question is, why? What caused all these fans to get so mad, some even vowed to never watch WWE again?
I’ve seen tweets and such, where people stated that they hate the fact that now, Cena and Orton are both champions and I get that. Both superstars get shoved down our throat so damn much, it’s likely one get’s sick of it.
But was that the reason? I think not.
I believe what ticked us all of was the fact that, when finally, after 17 years, after being an excellent performer at all times, Christian won that WHC and we all wanted it to last, wanted to be able to see him run with it, bake in that light for as long as possible, it was taken away from us, taken away from him.
His first title-win was tarnished.
Christian, of course, is a professional and has not commented, and for the sake of his career, I hope he never will (almost certain, as he never does). Actually, I was more than surprised to see Randy Orton going on about it on twitter.
He received some hate-tweets and whatnot, which I think is silly. It’s not like he writes the show. The guys just do what they’re told to do and, much like John Cena, it is not his fault how WWE portrays him.
Both Cena and Orton are Vince’ top-dogs and probably will be for a long time, whether you like it or now. Both are great superstars, if only WWE wouldn’t make us gag on them on a daily basis. Talking about over-exposure here.
Back on topic: I am well aware that Christian vs Orton is gonna happen, as much as I am aware of the fact that their match on SmackDown was pretty damn good.
I’d also like to think that this means Christian might turn heel and by God, Heel-Christian reeks of awesomeness.
BUT (yep, you guessed it): Couldnt WWE do this differently? Did they really HAVE TO take the title away from him THIS quick? Maybe he’ll win it again, but that very first time, has been ruined, for whatever reason, and that is what made everybody so mad.
Fans feel like Christian has been over-looked for many years, and when the fans saw that, yet again, he wasnt coming out on top in the end, they got mad, we felt cheated.
The fact that it was Orton just contributed.
You didn’t hear an outcry like this when Miz lost his title at Extreme Rules did you? Even though fans have been cheering him instead of Cena for weeks. Yeah, people might be sick of seeing Cena with the title, but there was no outrage, but more of a huge consensual *YAWN*
And as matter of fact, I hadn’t “heard” an outcry like this in a LONG time.
I especially loved how some people tried to say that, since the audience voted for Orton, they were the ones to blame. It made me smile. If anybody out there still believes WWE let’s the fans decide ANYTHING, bless ‘em.
Speaking of which: WWE does not listen to their fans, which is really their biggest problem right now. One could say that there’s still enough people spending their money, so WWE doesn’t have to worry about the voices of a few, but with ratings and PPV-buys down, I think it might be time to get that hearing-aid out.
The concept they’re working with has done it’s time and is now outdated. Too many PPV’s, not enough storylines, no reason to invest feelings and guys with potential are being held down for reasons I will possibly never understand, while guys who share their charisma with a potted plant, get pushed into oblivion … with the exception of Alberto Del Rio, who is indeed great and deserves it all.
But what about guys like Wade Barrett? Daniel Bryan? Zack Ryder? Dolph Ziggler? Swagger? McIntyre? Countless others! And don’t even get me started on how much I hated how the awesomeness that is CM Punk was portrayed in that feud with Orton … did he really have to lose every single match clean? Really?
And what about Christian? What about Captain Charisma? If Randy Orton can not be beat, does he even stand a chance to win or do we already know how that will end?
I am sure the feud itself will be great, if not the feud of the year (if it happens that is haha), but doe that mean that Christian will finally be considered a main-eventer when the smoke has cleared?
For me, there’s only very few reasons left to watch WWE. It’s been like that for a while now, but it is becoming more and more frustrating. The main reason I still tune in, is the guys … the guys in my personal Top 10.
And K harm A, her arrival excites me.
But that’s about it. Loyalty, the guys and a possibility that the Diva-matches may become bearable again. Outlook: gloomy!
Who am I kidding, I will quiet possibly always watch WWE, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Just like I still watch TNA (and believe me, it aint easy), like I watch ROH (or used to, before they vanished of television) and just like I used to watch WcW, ECW.
But I’d like to be able to watch an entire show without hitting the fast-forward-button in the near future.
Maybe @thefightinggeek’s new project will bring back the excitement I am missing. I’ve been plugging it on twitter, even donated a little cash, despite being broke haha.
Why? Because I am part of that “internet wrestling community” that complains about WWE/TNA a lot, so I now need to put my money where my mouth is.
Will this be as great as it should be? I have absolutely no idea! All I know is that Jeff Katz loves wrestling as much as I do, wants change as much as I do and if anybody can make it happen at the moment, it is him. Join the wrestling-revolution!
Here’s hoping I’ll love it!
I’ve been rambling on and on, even though this was supposed to be about Christian really lol. Forgive me, wrestling does that to me
If you don’t know … now you know … cause that’s how I roll
